While only a select few can actually clear their minds, like buddists, most regular people like you and me may have more challenges.
I only started meditating before sleep about a year ago and it has done wonders for my sleep! While I typically fall asleep within 10 minutes of putting on my meditation, my subconscious plays a huge role while I am asleep.
Your subconscious is the part of your mind that influences your mind and emotions when you are not aware of your surroundings, much like when you are asleep. Falling asleep is not a "failure" at meditating, it's a sign that you are relaxed (possibly exhausted) from your day...this is when your subconscious mind kicks in and provides you with positive calming thoughts to take you into a deeper sleep.
Falling asleep during meditation is your body's response to your thoughts and emotions and allows you to calm your mind. This may not happen during your first time meditating however it will if you keep at it....after about 7 days of meditating, your body will get used to the calmness that comes along with mediation. It's a pretty amazing feeling. When you wake in the morning, you will feel calm and peaceful....try it out...can't hurt!
My two favorite mediators on youtube.com are Jason Stephenson and Michael Sealey. Their voices are calm and really easy to listen to....here are a few links to get you started:

I would start with this one and do it straight for 21 days, every evenings before bed
21 days of letting go

Try it out...can't hurt! Do some sort of meditation everyday - either to start your day with it or end or both...within 7 days, tell me your feel better, calmer...more at peace!
